LOS ANGELES, CA — Police shut down traffic heading into Los Angeles International Airport and swarmed a truck filled with grenades and loaded guns Friday, only to discover the would-be terrorist was actually a collector of movie props transporting fake weapons.
The incident triggered a major scare and traffic nightmare at one of the nation’s busiest airports. It all started with a traffic checkpoint near Century and Sepulveda boulevards at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Officers discovered what appeared to be a stockpile of weapons in the back of a white pickup. They immediately closed the street to traffic, and police swarmed the area. The closure triggered miles-long backups in both directions of Sepulveda and Century boulevards.
A bomb squad converged on the truck while officers held the driver. An hour later, the weapons were determined to be fake. None of the props were operational, said Officer Rob Pedregon.
“The gentleman was a memorabilia collector, and all of the items were legally possessed,” Pedregon said. “No crime was committed.”
The pickup truck had been randomly picked to be searched at the checkpoint, Pedregon added.
