COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University senior Mitch Hagen (Sunburg, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) and sophomore Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.) were named 2012-13 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans on Tuesday, March 19.
A two-time NWCA All-America Scholar, Hagen went 4-2 at the NCAA Division III Championships March 15-16 to earn All-America honors with a fifth-place finish at 184 pounds. He ended his collegiate career with a pin of Colin Lenhardt, who was ranked ninth by D3wrestle.com, to finish his senior season with a 20-6 record. Hagen is an Integrative Health Science major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 3.51 GPA.
Michaelis (mick-kay-liss) dropped his first match of the tournament at 197 pounds by major decision (8-0) to Delaware Valley’s (Pa.) Aaron Karns, the third-ranked wrestler in the country, and his first consolation match to Jeremy Burns of Springfield (Mass.), 7-2. An economics and mathematics double-major with a 3.63 GPA, Michaelis ended the season with a 10-6 record.
To be eligible, wrestlers must have placed in the top six at the NCAA Regional and have a GPA over the previous two semesters, or a cumulative GPA, of 3.2 or better. Wrestlers that did not place in the top six at regionals are also eligible if they recorded a winning percentage of .670 or higher.
SJU has now totaled 10 Scholar All-Americans over the last five seasons.
The Johnnies finished 18th out of 64 teams at nationals with a total of 19.5 points, only two points from the three-way tie at 13th. SJU has qualified two or more wrestlers to the national tournament in 23 of the last 24 seasons, including at least one All-American in each of the past eight seasons.
